Childcare Expenses Associated with Business Travel

Aleta writes, "Is it unheard of for a company to allow a single parent to travel with their child ( 11/2 yrs old) and to expense their care such as nanny/babysitter fee? " Answer: My feelings is that nothing is unheard of. If you are a valued employee and travel on business, your company may be willing to cover the costs of your nanny/babysitter fee. Do they cover the fee while you are home? Do they offer other similar amenities to others at your level? (Perhaps, they pay for a spouse to accompany their employee on business trips.) If they cover the costs, it will probably count as taxable income to you, so be sure to check with your tax advisor!

Others I know have used their frequent flyer miles to purchase tickets for their child and nanny/babysitter (or aupair) to accompany them on business trips and then paid their caregiver some additional money to cover their extra hours worked. Some others, take along a family member who does not require payment.

Bottom line, if you can demonstrate how taking your baby and caregiver along at the company's expense will benefit the company, they may be willing to foot the bill.
